STUDIO 1
Carina Ong-Scutchings
“Studio 701”
About the artist.
Carina Ong-Scutchings is a ceramic artist based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Working across functional, decorative, and sculptural forms, she creates ceramics that are deeply inspired by nature and designed to invite both use and contemplation.
Carina began working with clay in 2003, and since then her practice has evolved through ongoing experimentation, exhibition, and dedication to the ceramic process. Her work explores the expressive potential of surface and color as integral design elements, drawing out subtle textures, hues, and finishes that complement the form.
She fires using both atmospheric and electric kilns, with experience in oxidation, reduction, gas, salt/soda, raku, alternative firings, and extensive wood firing in an anagama kiln. This range of methods enables her to collaborate with flame and environment, allowing unpredictability to shape and define each piece.
Carina’s ceramics reflect a quiet attention to detail, an appreciation for natural rhythms, and a love for the tactile beauty of the handmade.
Carina is a member of the Saskatoon Potters Guild, Wolverine Wood Firing Collective and the Thickwood Hills Studio Artist Group.
